Huge news from the CPSC this week! IKEA has recalled 169,000 high chairs from their Antilop line.

Kid to Kid stores* buy and sell previously owned child safety restraints that meet the following safety requirements recommended by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

5 years or newer (Many manufacturers “expire” seats after 6 years)
Never been in an automobile accident
Purchased from the original owner
Checked for strap or structural damage
Has the manufacturer’s label with model number & registration information
Has manufacturer’s instructions (or availability online)
Has not been recalled

When you purchase a car seat, be sure to register it so that you can be notified directly in the event of a recall. NHTSA has an easy to fill out form in case you haven’t done this already.

It’s also a good idea to visit a child seat inspection station to make sure that you’re using your child seat correctly. Here is an easy look up to find an Inspection Station near you:

Bumbo Seat Warning

The CPSC and Bumbo International have issued a renewed warning about Bumbo Seats.

Bumbo seats are a wonderful way to help your baby sit up as soon as he is able to support his head. But they should never be used on tables, counter tops, chairs, or other raised surfaces. A really active baby (even as young as 3 months old) could rock the seat, lean forward or sideways or arch his back until the seat tips over. On a raised surface, this could cause skull fractures and concussions. The Bumbo seat isn’t a baby sitter.

As with any baby product, use with caution and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Toy Safety for the Holidays

Safety steps to keep kids safe this holiday season:

Balloons: Children can choke or suffocate on deflated or broken balloons. Keep deflated balloons away from children younger than 8 years old. Discard broken balloons at once.
Small balls and other toys with small parts could be a choking hazard:
Avoid these for children younger than age 3.
Scooters and other riding toys: Riding toys, skateboards, and in-line skates go fast, and falls could be deadly. Helmets and safety gear should be worn properly at all times, and they should be sized to fit.
Magnets: Avoid building or play sets with small magnets for kids under age 6. If magnets or pieces with magnets are swallowed, serious injuries and/or death can occur.

Once gifts are open:

Immediately discard plastic wrappings or other packaging on toys before they become dangerous play things.
Keep toys appropriate for older children away from younger siblings.
Charging batteries should be supervised by adults. Chargers and adapters can pose thermal burn hazards to young children. Pay attention to instructions and warnings on battery chargers. Some chargers lack any mechanism to prevent overcharging.
